We drove 2.5 hours from Cheboygan, across the Mackinac bridge, up to the Upper Peninsula to do a hike at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It was 10+ miles, a long walk but mostly flat and easy and beautiful.

The trail started out through the woods, along a stream and then across a waterfall. There was a while we were walking up and down through this magical stretch of tall skinny trees (maples?) with low foliage on the ground, there was something fantastical about it.

When we came out of the woods, we were at a white sand beach with brilliant turquoise water and striated layers of rock – it’s fossilized sand!

There was a kayak group out in the water, and the rest of the morning we walked along the lakeshore above the cliffs, and saw the kayaks following the shoreline down below.

We were in and out of the woods and along the sandy cliff edges for most of the hike, then took a break at Chapel beach and hiked back through the woods for the last few miles.
