Lighthouse picnic in Ferryland

We had a beautiful drive to Ferryland, then bumped along the rocky peninsula road to park at the start of the hike. We could see whales spouting out in the bay, before we even started our hike!

The trail is an old dirt road, steep at first and then gentle and easy the rest of the way.

We walked mostly through woods, with glimpses of ocean. Before too long we could already catch sight of the lighthouse!

The sun was warm but the wind was whipping all around the bare rocky slopes. We found a sheltered spot in the lee of a big boulder and had a great picnic of Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches we’d packed along from our favorite sandwich shop downtown.

We clambered over some otherworldly striated rock formations.

Clouds of white spray against the blue water caught our eyes- the whales were still nearby! We sat for a long time on a windy spot at the edge of the land, watching whales breach all around us. Sometimes we’d see a glistening stretch of the whale’s back and dorsal fin as they surfaced and dove back down. We were all pretty excited to see so many whales, so close, and transfixed by their comings and goings for a long time.

On the walk back, we caught some sparkling views of the green slopes, cliffs and islands all around.
