Torbay Point via Cobbler’s Path

Amy and I had planned to get out of the city for a longer hike today- it’s my day off and we were thinking of trying out the stretch of East Coast Trail from Cape Spear to Maddox Cove. But it turned out that Sadie had a little sniffly nose (which in COVID times means that she can’t go to preschool) so we had to revise our plans. We ended up at Cobbler’s Path, which is only a short drive from home. I’d been curious to check it out since we very first moved here.

The trail starts out through boreal forest with glimpses of the ocean through the trees. Lots of boardwalks but some of them are pretty rotten. I assume this is usually a soggy area, but it’s been such a hot, dry summer that it’s more dusty than boggy.

Our trail comes out of the woods and ends at the top of a cliff, with ocean all around. Cobbler’s Path stretched off to the right and the left, along the edge of the land.

We settle down for lunch on the rocks, keeping a close eye on miss Sadie, who doesn’t seem very sick at all – quite bouncy and energetic!

I’m eager to explore the cliffs more, so Amy kindly agrees to entertain Sadie in a safe spot while I wander out onto the point to take some pictures.

The steps down to the end of the point look a little questionable from above, but they’re ok, just going down one step at a time.

I keep hoping to catch some cool ocean breezes but it’s surprisingly hot and still up here. Finally, at the very end, I can scramble down to the rocks and feel some cold air and listen to the waves for a moment.

Here’s the view looking back from the end of the point.

Sadie and Amy have waited patiently for me to return. Now Amy gets a turn to explore the point while Sadie teaches me some mountaintop yoga poses.
