- Challenged to find a worthy magazine and re-design it, I came up with Badaboom Gramophone, a substantial, eclectic and vaguely music-related zine based on “the idea put forth by Jacques Derrida in Ulysses Gramophone. In that essay, Derrida suggests that having little knowledge on a subject could result in just as innovative a perspective as the thoughts put forth by an expert. In the same approach, the idea of Badaboom Gramophone is to offer a forum for non-experts to pontificate on subjects which nonetheless interest them.” I worked with the editor to design, compile and lay out the entire fourth issue, a hefty (224 pages!) and rewarding project entailing many many hours logged in Quark XPress. Our objective was to create a newer and cleaner but entirely unpretentious design that suited the text-heavy nature of the zine.
